Epidote

Etymologie : du grec epidosis = complément

Formule : Ca₂(Fe,Al)Al₂[OH|SiO₄|Si₂O₇]

Système cristallin : monoclinique

couleur : vert foncé, jaune-vert.

Dureté selon Mohs : 6 - 7

Densité : 3,35 - 3,38

Particularités : foisonne et fond dans la flamme, insoluble dans les acides. Agrégats compacts, rayonnants, spathiques, massifs.

Utilisations : parfois comme pierre fine.

On distingue plusieurs variétés :

* piémontite : variété d'épidote rouge à rouge foncé. Cristaux rares.

* pistacite : variété d'épidote vert pistache, riche en fer.

* clinozoïsite : variété d'épidote peu on non ferrifère.

* tawmawite : variété d'épidote chromifère.
